Hypertension in India
1 in 4 Indian adults has hypertension (high blood pressure). Many don't know it — hypertension is called "the silent killer" because it has no obvious symptoms but causes heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
Blood Pressure Numbers
| Category | Systolic (mmHg) | Diastolic (mmHg) |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Below 120 | Below 80 |
| Elevated | 120–129 | Below 80 |
| High BP Stage 1 | 130–139 | 80–89 |
| High BP Stage 2 | 140+ | 90+ |
| Hypertensive Crisis | 180+ | 120+ |
DASH Diet for Blood Pressure
DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) has the strongest evidence for BP reduction:
Include More:
- Fruits and vegetables (potassium-rich: banana, tomato, orange, leafy greens)
- Low-fat dairy (calcium + potassium)
- Whole grains and legumes
- Nuts and seeds (magnesium)
Reduce Drastically:
- Salt (sodium): Under 5g/day (≈1 teaspoon). Indian food often has 2–3× this. Stop adding extra salt at table, reduce pickles/pappad/packaged food
- Alcohol: Raises blood pressure significantly
- Processed foods (high hidden sodium)
- Saturated fats (red meat, full-fat dairy)
Indian Diet Modifications
- Use less salt in cooking — adjust gradually over 2–4 weeks
- Avoid achaar, papad, namkeen, chips
- Cook with mustard oil or olive oil (limited ghee)
- Include amla, garlic, methi in daily diet — mild BP-lowering effects
- Hibiscus tea (gudhal flower tea) has evidence for mild BP reduction
Exercise for Blood Pressure
- 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise (brisk walk, cycling, swimming) 5 days/week can reduce systolic BP by 5–8 mmHg
- Yoga (pranayama, Shavasana, Yoga Nidra) also effective
- Avoid very intense exercise without medical clearance if BP is uncontrolled
Home BP Monitoring
- Buy an automatic upper-arm BP monitor (Omron, Dr. Morepen, A&D) — ₹1,500–4,000
- Take readings in the morning before medication and in the evening
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring
- Record in a log to share with doctor
When Medication is Needed
If lifestyle changes don't bring BP below 140/90 in 3 months, medication is required. Common first-line drugs in India: Amlodipine, Losartan, Telmisartan, Atenolol. Never stop medication without doctor's advice — can cause rebound hypertension.
