Compare FD interest rates across banks, understand FD types, tax implications, and how to choose the best fixed deposit in India.
Fixed Deposits: India's Most Popular Investment
Fixed Deposits (FDs) remain the most popular investment for Indians, offering guaranteed returns, capital safety, and flexibility. While returns may not beat inflation over long periods, FDs serve an important role in financial planning for emergency funds, near-term goals, and capital preservation.
Types of Fixed Deposits
- Regular FD: 7 days to 10 years tenure, quarterly interest payout or cumulative
- Tax Saver FD: 5-year lock-in, eligible for 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh
- Senior Citizen FD: Additional 0.25-0.50% interest for age 60+
- Flexi/Sweep-in FD: Linked to savings account for liquidity
- NRE/NRO FD: For Non-Resident Indians
FD Interest Rates 2024 (Representative)
Rates change frequently — verify current rates before investing
- Small Finance Banks (highest): 8.25-9.0% (Unity, Suryoday, Utkarsh SFB)
- Private Banks: 7.0-7.75% (HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak)
- Public Sector Banks: 6.5-7.25% (SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB)

Tax on FD Interest
FD interest is fully taxable at your income tax slab rate. TDS is deducted at 10% if annual interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for seniors). Submit Form 15G/15H if your income is below taxable limit to avoid TDS deduction.
DICGC Insurance
All bank deposits (FD + savings + RD) up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank are insured by DICGC (Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation). This insurance applies even if a bank fails. For amounts above ₹5 lakh, spread deposits across multiple banks.
When to Choose FD
FD is ideal for: emergency fund (use flexi FD), capital you need within 1-3 years, conservative investors in or near retirement, and balancing equity-heavy portfolios. For wealth creation goals beyond 5 years, equity mutual funds historically outperform FDs.
