Why Invest in Gold?
Gold has been a trusted store of value for centuries. In India, it also serves as a hedge against inflation and currency depreciation. But not all gold investments are equal.
Option 1: Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB)
Issued by the RBI, SGBs are government securities denominated in grams of gold.
- Return: Gold price appreciation + 2.5% annual interest
- Tax: Capital gains on redemption (after 8 years) are tax-exempt
- Minimum: 1 gram | Maximum: 4 kg/year (individual)
- Lock-in: 8 years (exit after 5th year)
- Best for: Long-term investors who want maximum returns
Option 2: Gold ETFs
Exchange-traded funds that track gold price, traded on NSE/BSE like stocks.
- Return: Tracks gold price (no interest)
- Tax: LTCG at 20% with indexation (after 3 years)
- Minimum: 1 unit (= 1 gram approximately)
- Liquidity: Can sell any trading day
- Best for: Flexible investors who may need to exit early
Option 3: Physical Gold (Jewellery/Coins)
- Return: Gold price appreciation only
- Extra costs: Making charges, storage, insurance
- Purity risk: If not hallmarked
- Best for: Those who want gold for actual use or traditional reasons
Comparison Summary
| Feature | SGB | ETF | Physical |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra return | 2.5% interest | None | None |
| Tax efficiency | Best | Good | Worst |
| Liquidity | Low | High | Medium |
Verdict
For pure investment: SGBs are best if you can lock in for 8 years. Gold ETFs for flexibility. Avoid physical gold as pure investment due to making charges and storage costs.
