What Is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

Input Tax Credit means reducing your GST liability by the GST you've already paid on your business purchases. If you pay ₹1,000 GST on purchases and collect ₹1,500 GST on sales, you pay only ₹500 to the government. ITC prevents the cascading effect of tax-on-tax.

How ITC Works — Simple Example

  • You buy raw materials, pay GST of ₹18,000
  • You manufacture and sell goods, collect GST of ₹30,000
  • ITC claim: ₹18,000
  • GST payable to government: ₹30,000 – ₹18,000 = ₹12,000

Conditions for Claiming ITC

  • You must be a registered GST taxpayer
  • You must possess a tax invoice or debit note from supplier
  • Supplier must have actually paid the tax to government and filed their GSTR-1
  • Goods/services must be received
  • ITC not blocked (see blocked credits below)
  • Claim must be made within time limit

Blocked Credits — ITC NOT Available On

  • Motor vehicles (except commercial use, driving schools, transportation)
  • Food and beverages (unless you're in F&B business)
  • Beauty treatment, health services
  • Works contract for immovable property (construction)
  • Membership of clubs and gyms
  • Travel benefits to employees (vacations)

ITC Reconciliation: GSTR-2B

GSTR-2B is auto-generated monthly showing ITC available from supplier filings. You can only claim ITC appearing in your GSTR-2B. This is critical — if your supplier hasn't filed, ITC not available to you. Reconcile your purchase register with GSTR-2B monthly.

Common ITC Mistakes

  • Claiming ITC on items used for personal use
  • Claiming ITC when supplier hasn't filed GSTR-1
  • Missing the deadline (claim ITC before September return of next FY)
  • Claiming ITC on exempt goods/services
  • Not maintaining proper records and invoices

Maximizing ITC

  • Buy from registered GST vendors only (avoid unregistered vendors for significant purchases)
  • Verify supplier's GSTIN on GST portal before paying
  • Ensure invoice has all required details (GSTIN, HSN code, etc.)
  • Track GSTR-2B reconciliation monthly
  • Claim all eligible ITC promptly — don't leave it on the table
