Types of Life Insurance in India
Life insurance protects your family financially if you die. But not all policies are equal — some are pure protection, others mix insurance with investment (which rarely works well).
1. Term Insurance (Pure Life Cover)
- What it is: Pays a sum assured to your family if you die within the policy term. Zero payout if you survive.
- Premium: Very affordable — ₹1 crore cover for 30-year-old non-smoker: ₹800–1,200/month
- Best for: Primary earners with dependents
- Top plans: LIC Tech Term, HDFC Click2Protect, ICICI iProtect Smart, Max Life Smart Term Plan
2. ULIP (Unit Linked Insurance Plan)
- What it is: Premium split between insurance cover and market investments (equity/debt funds)
- Premium: ₹1,500–5,000+/month for modest cover
- The problem: High charges (commission + mortality + fund management fees) eat into returns. First 3–5 years' premiums mostly go to charges. Returns often worse than mutual funds.
- SEBI/IRDA has capped charges but ULIPs still generally give 2–3% lower returns than equivalent mutual funds
3. Endowment / Money-Back Plans
- What it is: Pays a lump sum at maturity + death benefit. Guaranteed return.
- The problem: Returns are typically 4–6% — lower than inflation. You're overpaying for the insurance component and getting poor investment returns.
- LIC traditional plans fall in this category — trusted but low ROI
4. Whole Life Insurance
- Coverage for life (till age 99/100). Higher premiums. Limited use cases in India — mostly for estate planning and HNI wealth transfer.
Expert Consensus: Buy Term + Invest Separately
Almost all Indian financial planners recommend: Term Insurance for protection + Mutual Funds for investment (instead of ULIP or endowment).
Why: ₹20,000/year can buy ₹1 crore term cover. The remaining ₹80,000 invested in a Nifty 50 index fund at 12% CAGR for 20 years = ~₹64 lakh. ULIP on the same premium: likely ₹40–50 lakh with lower insurance cover.
How Much Cover Do You Need?
Rule of thumb: 10–15× your annual income
- Annual income ₹10 lakh → ₹1–1.5 crore term cover
- Annual income ₹25 lakh → ₹2.5–3.5 crore term cover
- Consider outstanding loans: home loan + other loans should be covered
When to Buy Term Insurance
- As early as possible (premiums are based on age at purchase)
- Before you have dependents is fine, but more urgent after marriage/children
- Don't wait — a health diagnosis can make you uninsurable
- Buy online: 20–30% cheaper than buying through an agent
