Mutual Fund Categories in India (SEBI Classification)

SEBI has classified Indian mutual funds into 5 broad categories. Understanding them helps you match funds to your financial goals.

1. Equity Funds

Invest primarily in stocks. Suitable for long-term (5+ years) goals and investors who can tolerate volatility.

2. Debt Funds

Invest in bonds, government securities, and money market instruments. Lower risk than equity; better returns than FDs for short-to-medium term.

  • Liquid funds: Up to 91-day maturity. Park emergency funds here. Better than savings account.
  • Short duration: 1–3 year maturity. Good for 2–3 year goals.
  • Corporate bond funds: High-quality corporate bonds. Higher returns than gilt funds.
  • Gilt funds: Only government securities — safest debt fund but interest rate sensitive.

3. Hybrid Funds

Mix of equity and debt in varying proportions.

  • Aggressive Hybrid: 65–80% equity, 20–35% debt. Good for moderate risk investors with 3+ year horizon.
  • Conservative Hybrid: 10–25% equity, 75–90% debt. For seniors or low-risk investors.
  • Balanced Advantage Fund (BAF): Dynamically adjusts equity:debt ratio based on market valuation. Good for beginners.

4. Index Funds and ETFs

Passively track a market index (Nifty 50, Sensex, Nifty Next 50). Very low expense ratio (0.05–0.20% vs 1–2% for active funds). Warren Buffett and most research recommend index funds for most investors.

  • Nifty 50 Index Fund: Best starting point for beginners
  • Nifty Next 50: Next 50 companies after Nifty 50 — more growth potential, more risk
  • Nifty 500: Broad market exposure

5. Sectoral / Thematic Funds

Invest in specific sectors: Technology, Banking, Pharma, Infrastructure, ESG. High risk — sector can underperform for years. Only for informed investors who have a conviction on specific sectors.
