How to Apply for a New Passport in India: Complete Online Guide

An Indian passport is one of the most important travel documents. The application process has been significantly simplified through the Passport Seva online portal. Most applicants can now complete the process without visiting a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) more than once.

Types of Passports

• Ordinary Passport (Navy Blue): For regular citizens for tourism, business, studies abroad
• Official Passport (White): For government employees travelling on official duty
• Diplomatic Passport (Maroon): For diplomats and high-ranking officials

Documents Required (First-Time Applicant)

• Proof of Birth: Birth certificate / school leaving certificate / matriculation certificate
• Proof of Address: Aadhaar card / voter ID / utility bill / bank passbook
• Proof of Identity: Aadhaar card / voter ID / PAN card
• Photo: 2 recent passport-size photos (white background)
• If applicable: Marriage certificate, divorce decree, parents' documents (for minors)

Step-by-Step Online Application

1. Register: Visit passportindia.gov.in → Register Now → Create account with email and mobile
2. Login and click "Apply for Fresh Passport"
3. Fill Application Form: Personal details, family details, address details, previous travel details
4. Pay Fee Online:
   • Normal (30–45 days): ₹1,500 (36 pages) or ₹2,000 (60 pages)
   • Tatkaal (urgent, 3–7 days): ₹3,500 (36 pages) or ₹4,000 (60 pages)
5. Book Appointment: Select nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) and time slot
6. Visit PSK on appointment day with printed application form + original documents
7. Biometric recording (photo, signature, fingerprints) done at PSK
8. Police verification conducted at your address (normal passport; Tatkaal does verification after dispatch)
9. Dispatch: Passport delivered by India Post Speed Post to your address

Track Your Application

passportindia.gov.in → Track Application Status. Enter File Number (from receipt) + Date of Birth.

Passport Renewal

• Renew when: less than 6 months validity remaining, or you've run out of pages
• Same process as fresh passport online
• Submit old passport at PSK along with renewal application
• Documents required: Address proof + old passport

Emergency / Lost Passport

• File FIR at nearest police station for lost passport
• Apply for fresh passport with FIR copy
• Embassy/consulate if abroad: Contact nearest Indian Embassy for Emergency Certificate
