Online Scams: A Growing Problem in India

India loses thousands of crores annually to cyber fraud. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) receives 1.5+ lakh complaints per month. Knowing the common scams is your first line of defence.

1. UPI and Payment Scams

The "Wrong Transfer" Scam

Scammer calls saying they "accidentally" sent you money via UPI and asks you to return it. But they actually sent a payment REQUEST (not money) — pressing "Pay" sends YOUR money to them.

How to stay safe: Check your bank balance, not WhatsApp. Verify actual credit in account. Never pay money to "return" a transfer without bank verification.

UPI QR Code Scam

Scammer sends a QR code asking you to scan to "receive" money. Scanning and confirming a QR code SENDS money — it cannot receive it.

Rule: You never need to scan a QR code or enter UPI PIN to receive money.

2. OTP and SIM Card Fraud

Scammer impersonates bank/telecom employee, says there's a problem with your account, and asks for OTP to "verify". OTP is then used to log into your net banking and transfer money.

Rule: No bank, telecom company, or government agency will EVER ask for your OTP, card CVV, PIN, or internet banking password. Never share these with anyone.

3. Investment Scams

WhatsApp / Telegram "Investment Groups"

Added to a group with fake members posting screenshots of huge profits. "Mentor" offers guaranteed returns of 20–50% monthly. You invest small, see "profit", invest more — then the group disappears.

Ponzi Schemes

Promise guaranteed high returns. Pay initial investors from new investor money. Collapse when new investors dry up. Red flags: returns too high to be legitimate, no clear investment strategy explained, pressure to recruit others.

4. Job Scams

Fake job offers from "well-known companies" on WhatsApp. Ask for "registration fee", "training fee", or "security deposit". Disappear after payment.

Rule: Legitimate employers never ask for payment during hiring. Verify job offers only through official company websites.

5. "Digital Arrest" Scam

Scammer impersonates police/CBI/ED/TRAI officer via video call. Claims you're involved in money laundering/drug trafficking. Demands payment to "settle" case without arrest. Keeps victim on video call for hours or days.

Rule: No government agency conducts arrests or investigations over video calls or asks for payment via UPI/cryptocurrency.

6. Online Shopping Fraud

Fake shopping websites with suspiciously low prices. Take payment, send inferior product or nothing.

Safe practices: Only shop on established platforms (Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra). Check website domain carefully — scam sites often use domains like "amaz0n-india.in". Look for secure connection (https) and company details.
