Thyroid and Diet: The Connection

Thyroid function is closely linked to nutrition. While diet alone cannot cure thyroid disorders, the right foods can support thyroid health and improve the effectiveness of medication.

For Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)

Hypothyroidism slows metabolism. The thyroid needs iodine and selenium to produce hormones.

Foods to Include

  • Iodine-rich: Iodised salt, seafood (for non-vegetarians), eggs
  • Selenium-rich: Brazil nuts (2/day), sunflower seeds, eggs, whole grains
  • Zinc-rich: Pumpkin seeds, legumes, nuts
  • Iron-rich: Spinach, lentils, sesame seeds (helps thyroid hormone synthesis)
  • Vitamin D: Egg yolk, mushrooms, sun exposure; deficiency worsens hypothyroidism

Foods to Limit

  • Goitrogens (raw): Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, soy — cooking reduces their effect
  • Gluten: Some people with Hashimoto's benefit from reducing gluten
  • Processed foods: Can worsen inflammation

For Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)

Foods to Include

  • Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage) — they naturally slow thyroid
  • Low-iodine diet during radioactive iodine treatment (as advised by doctor)
  • Calcium-rich foods — hyperthyroidism can cause bone loss

Foods to Avoid

  • Excess iodine — seaweed, iodised salt in large amounts
  • Caffeine — worsens palpitations and anxiety

Indian Meal Tips for Thyroid Patients

  • Take thyroid medication (levothyroxine) on empty stomach, 30–60 min before meals
  • Avoid calcium-rich foods (milk, curd) 4 hours after medication — they interfere with absorption
  • Cook cruciferous vegetables rather than eating them raw
  • Stay hydrated — aim for 8–10 glasses of water daily

Consult Your Doctor

Diet supports thyroid treatment but doesn't replace it. Always follow your endocrinologist's advice and take prescribed medication as directed.
