Yoga originated in India and is increasingly practised worldwide for its physical and mental health benefits. For urban Indians dealing with desk jobs, stress, and lifestyle diseases, yoga offers a comprehensive solution.

Benefits of Regular Yoga

  • Strengthens core and postural muscles
  • Reduces cortisol (stress hormone)
  • Improves sleep quality

Starting Equipment

  • Yoga mat (₹500–2,000): Necessary for grip and cushioning. Brands: Strauss, Boldfit, Lifelong
  • Comfortable clothing: Cotton or moisture-wicking fabric that allows movement
  • Block and strap: Helpful for beginners with limited flexibility (₹300–500 for both)
  • That's all you need to start

When and Where to Practice

  • Best time: Early morning before breakfast (traditional) or evening before dinner
  • Duration: Start with 20–30 minutes; build to 45–60 minutes
  • Practice on empty or near-empty stomach
  • Clean, ventilated space, ideally outdoors in the morning

Essential Beginner Poses (Asanas)

Warm-Up

  • Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Stand tall, feet together, arms at sides, spine long. Foundation of all standing poses.
  • Marjaryasana-Bitilasana (Cat-Cow): On hands and knees. Inhale-arch back (cow); exhale-round spine (cat). Warms up spine.

Core Beginner Poses

  • Balasana (Child's Pose): Kneel, sit back on heels, fold forward. Resting pose. Hold 30–60 seconds. Great for lower back.
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog): Inverted V shape. Builds strength in arms and legs; stretches hamstrings and calves.
  • Virabhadrasana I (Warrior 1): Step one foot forward, back heel grounded, arms raised. Builds strength and focus.
  • Trikonasana (Triangle Pose): Wide-legged stance, hand reaches to floor/block, other arm up. Side body stretch.
  • Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (Bridge Pose): Lying on back, knees bent, lift hips. Strengthens back, opens chest.

Pranayama (Breathing Exercises)

  • Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing): Close right nostril with thumb, inhale left. Switch. Calms mind, reduces BP.
  • Bhramari (Bee Breath): Make humming sound on exhale. Reduces anxiety, great before sleep.
