Intermediate Yoga Poses for Indians: Take Your Practice to Next Level
Move beyond basic yoga with these intermediate poses — warrior variations, inversions, and balance poses for Indian practitioners.
Ready to Level Up Your Yoga?
Once you've mastered the basics (Mountain Pose, Downward Dog, Child's Pose, Warrior I & II), intermediate yoga opens new dimensions — strength, flexibility, balance, and deeper breathwork. These poses are achievable with 3–6 months of regular practice.
Warrior III (Virabhadrasana III)
Benefits: Strengthens core, legs, and back; improves balance and focus
How to: From Warrior I, shift weight to front foot. Hinge forward, extending the back leg parallel to floor. Arms extended forward or in prayer position. Hold 30 seconds each side. Build up with hands on a chair first.
Camel Pose (Ustrasana)
Benefits: Deep chest opener, stretches hip flexors, improves posture
How to: Kneel with hips over knees. Place hands on lower back. Slowly arch back, reaching hands to heels. Don't force if neck strains — look straight ahead instead of dropping head back.
Crow Pose (Bakasana) — Your First Arm Balance
Benefits: Builds wrist, arm, and core strength; improves concentration
How to: Squat with hands on floor, shoulder-width. Bend elbows, lean forward placing knees on upper arms. Lift feet one at a time. Tip: place a cushion in front while learning. This IS achievable for most people.
Supported Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana)
Benefits: Calms nervous system, thyroid stimulation, improves circulation
Note: Avoid with neck injury, high BP, during menstruation. Use folded blankets under shoulders to protect neck. Learn with a teacher first.
Bridge to Wheel Pose Progression
Start with Bridge (Setu Bandhasana) — lie on back, feet flat, lift hips. When comfortable, try Full Wheel (Urdhva Dhanurasana) — hands by ears, push up into full backbend. This can take months to build up to safely.
