Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ideal step-up percentage?
Most financial planners recommend a 10–15% annual step-up, matching your salary increment rate. At minimum, step-up by the inflation rate (6–7%) to maintain real investment value. Some aggressive investors use 20–25% step-up in early career years.
How is Step-Up SIP different from regular SIP?
In a regular SIP, your monthly investment stays fixed (e.g., ₹5,000 every month for 20 years). In a Step-Up SIP, you increase this amount each year (e.g., ₹5,000 → ₹5,500 → ₹6,050...). The additional compounding on increased contributions creates significantly more wealth.
Can I set up Step-Up SIP online?
Yes — most AMCs (HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Mirae, Axis etc.) offer Top-Up SIP facility online via their apps or through mutual fund aggregators like MFCentral, Kuvera, Zerodha Coin, or Groww. You can set the annual increment as a fixed amount or percentage.
What happens if I miss a step-up in a particular year?
Nothing — Step-Up SIP is flexible. You can skip the annual increment in any year and resume the step-up the following year. It won't affect past investments; only the future SIP amount changes. This is a key advantage over rigid investment plans.
