Frequently Asked Questions
In the US, 15-18% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, 20% for good service, and 20-25% for excellent service. In many other countries (India, Japan, much of Europe), tipping is less expected or not customary.
Both are acceptable. Tipping on pre-tax is technically more correct, but most people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. The difference is small — on a $100 bill with 10% tax, it's about $1.50 difference on a 15% tip.
In tipping cultures (US, Canada), servers depend on tips as their primary income, so 0% is considered very rude except for severe service failures. In many Asian countries (Japan, South Korea, China), tipping can be seen as disrespectful.
Use our calculator for the equal split. For unequal splits, it's simplest to have each person calculate their own items + drinks, add the group's shared tip (usually agreed as a percentage), and pay separately.
